Jane M. Wilburne Ed. D. is a Mathematics Education Professor who recently retired from Penn State University to pursue opportunities to work with school districts. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from D’Youville College and her Master’s Degree in Mathematics Education from Buffalo State University, both located in Buffalo, NY. Dr. Wilburne attained her Ed. D. from Temple University in Mathematics Education following several years as a mathematics teacher in public schools.
Joining Penn State as an Assistant Professor in 2004, Dr. Wilburne was tenured in 2010 and promoted to full professor in 2018. Her expertise is in teacher practice related to enhancing teachers’ confidence and pedagogical knowledge to promote students’ mathematical problem solving and critical thinking skills. Dr. Wilburne has been the Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator on grants in excess of $7 million from National Science Foundation, the Mathematics and Science Partnership, and the Pennsylvania Department of Education related to research and innovations in teacher preparation, mathematics coaching, and recruiting students into mathematics and science careers.
Dr. Wilburne was the Chair of the Editorial Panel for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics "Teaching Children Mathematics" journal and a contributor to the Problem Solving Feature articles. She has made over 150 scholarly contributions in the field of mathematics education, including introducing Q-Methodology as a research approach to mathematics’ educators. Dr. Wilburne was instrumental in working with the Department of Education to design the competencies for a mathematics coaching endorsement.
Jane has worked with K-12 school districts across Pennsylvania. She has conducted full day workshops, facilitated Professional Learning Communities, conducting coaching sessions with classroom teachers, and taught courses aimed at enhancing inservice teachers' knowledge of the mathematics content and curriculum.
